The world spends more on health than ever before. In fact, 10% of the global economy (7.8 trillion US dollars) has now invested in health care. This year’s Global Healthcare Expenditure Report “Transforming the World” shows that from 2000 to 2017, the growth rate of healthcare spending exceeded the world economy, with an annual growth rate of 3.9%, while the economic growth rate was only 3%. There are still huge inequalities, and per capita, medical expenses in high-income countries are more than 70 times higher than in low-income countries. But developing countries are catching up. In these countries/regions, from 2000 to 2017, health care spending increased by more than 6% annually.
Investment in health is an investment in people and the economy. This is also an investment in the future.
